Helping the environment
The Bennett family are privileged to have lived at Brackenborough for over 100 years. We aim to preserve and enhance its beauty for future generations to enjoy, and to maintain the viability of our estate as part of a healthy local community.
These are some of the things we do:
- Heat our apartments and house with a woodchip burner
- Insulate the coach house
- Close the main doors at night and in cold weather
- Use low energy/LED bulbs where possible
- Use environmentally friendly cleaning products
- Provide free Fair Trade tea, coffee, chocolate and sugar
- Supply a free Lincolnshire plum bread from Louth market
- Recycle print cartridges, glass, plastic, paper and cans
- Compost waste food and use in our garden
- Share our own grown vegetables and fruit with guests
- Catch rainwater to water the garden
- Establish set aside areas and wildlife margins
- Use no fertiliser on our parkland
- Offer a prize for arriving without use of a car – we offer:
- a free gift of local produce (e.g. beer, honey, strawberries, Pipers crisps or similar) for anyone who arrives at Brackenborough/in Louth by public transport; and
- a free Brackenborough Book to the guest who has cycled/walked from the furthest away – the current record was set by a guest who took a train to Grimsby, took a bus to Fotherby and walked the last mile or so across the fields! We have also had a guest who cycled to Brackenborough from Cambridge!
Here are some things you can do to help during your stay:
- Use our recycling facilities
- Switch off lights/TV when you are not using them
- Turn heating down at night
- Close doors and windows when heating is on
- Use our washing line instead of the tumble dryer
- Take a shower instead of a bath
- Do not use your car for the day and enjoy the garden/farm
- Enjoy the wildlife on the farm – badgers, hares, birds, insects etc.
- Use public transport
- Visit the excellent shops and market at Louth
- Use the local pubs, restaurant and cafes
- Bring your bike and explore
- Purchase some local produce to take home
